Northern Ireland's second match at the UEFA Women's Under-17 European Championship ended in a 3-0 defeat by Norway at the Coleraine Showgrounds. Norway established a two-goal lead inside 19 minutes and added a third late in the second half, despite a determined response from the hosts.
The opening goal arrived after ten minutes when Mie Hoem progressed down the right and delivered a low ball into the area. Davis Lundhaug met it first time and found the net, with Northern Ireland goalkeeper Ifeoma Agoha getting a hand to the effort but unable to keep it out.
Northern Ireland almost produced an immediate answer. Anna Rose Robinson carried the ball forward and sent a shot narrowly wide, offering encouragement after Norway's fast start. The visitors, however, doubled their advantage from a set piece nine minutes later.
Live Balmforth's corner was directed into a crowded six-yard area and Norway captain Isa Lund rose to head home. Gail Redmond's side then had to withstand further pressure, with Agoha handling well and the defence making several important interventions.
Captain Chloe Beckinsale blocked an Agnes Stolan effort and later cleared a Lundhaug attempt from the goal line. Emilee Leacock also protected the net when Stine Solemdal found space, while Agoha made saves as Norway continued to create openings from wide areas.
The hosts retained a threat of their own. Sara Devany worked an opportunity before half-time that Norway goalkeeper Erla Braathen pushed away, and Charlotte Havern tried to release Leacock with a measured pass soon after the restart.
Norway's third goal came in the 78th minute, when Solemdal spotted space and sent a long-range finish over the defensive line. Agoha prevented a fourth with a full-length save from Lina Morch in the closing minutes.
Northern Ireland now turn to their final Group A fixture against Germany at Inver Park on Sunday. The hosts will seek their first points of the tournament against a German side already assured of a semi-final place after two victories.
