On 8 October, the Department for the Economy confirmed it has initiated a public appointment competition to select a Chair for the Board of the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland.
Details regarding the process can be accessed via the official Department for the Economy website or by requesting an application booklet through email at pau@economy-ni.gov.uk.
The incoming leader will be tasked with steering the body as it navigates substantial organisational change, including the implementation of its 2026–2032 Corporate Plan and potential extensions to statutory duties.
As the region's independent statutory consumer representative, the Council is responsible for ensuring that protection laws function effectively across the market.
Key priorities facing the organisation include managing cost-of-living pressures, adapting to expanding digital markets and supporting the transition to net zero emissions.
The successful candidate will be required to deliver strong strategic direction, maintain rigorous governance standards and enhance the body's external standing.
Applicants are expected to demonstrate the capacity to provide clear leadership during this phase of development.
The Department for the Economy has stated its commitment to conducting the selection process based on merit, independent evaluation and open procedures.
