The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland has issued an order preventing the Orange Order parade at Drumcree following a formal request from the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

Chief Constable Jon Boutcher applied under section nine of the Public Processions (Northern Ireland) Act 1998 to have the Parades Commission determination reconsidered.

The application was submitted after two weeks of tension between residents on Garvaghy Road in Portadown and members of the local district lodge.

A significant demonstration took place on the road, which stopped the planned route from Drumcree Church into Portadown.

Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant stated he had reviewed the original decision made by the Parades Commission two weeks ago.

The commission had authorised the procession with specific restrictions in place for Garvaghy Road.

First Minister Michelle O'Neill confirmed receipt of correspondence from Boutcher regarding the ongoing dispute over parading rights.

An order under section eleven was subsequently issued to formally ban the event.
