Seven wild Asiatic elephants were killed and one injured when a passenger train struck a herd in Hojai district, Assam, India. The incident occurred on 20 December 2025, during a crossing attempt by the animals.
The train driver reported spotting a herd of approximately 100 elephants and applied emergency brakes. Despite this, the train collided with some animals, resulting in seven fatalities and one injury.
Five of the train's coaches derailed on impact, but no passengers were injured. The train resumed its journey after delinking non-derailed coaches, and affected passengers were transferred to Guwahati.
