The Supreme Federal Court of Brazil convicted Chiquinho and Domingos Brazão of ordering the 2018 killing of Rio city councilor Marielle Franco and her driver. The court found they had orchestrated the attack as part of a broader campaign against political opponents.
Each defendant received a sentence of 76 years and three months for double aggravated homicide and participation in an armed criminal organisation. The court determined that Franco had been targeted due to her efforts to block illegal housing developments that threatened militia interests.
The court ruled that the Brazao brothers were not merely connected to the militia but were integral to its operations. Three other individuals were also convicted for roles in the murder plot, including a former police commissioner and a militia member who monitored Franco.
