Ulster University intends to make up to 450 staff redundant to address a projected £25m in required savings. The university currently employs approximately 3,100 staff across its Belfast, Londonderry, Coleraine and Qatar campuses.
The university cited the absence of a sustainable higher education funding model as a key reason for the decision. Consultation with staff unions will be required before any redundancy process proceeds.
A senior civil servant recently questioned whether funding was secured for the planned expansion of the Magee campus. The University and College Union has warned that staff cuts threaten academic quality and student experience.
