Lewisham council falls to Greens after 55 years of Labour control

The Green Party has won control of Lewisham Council, ending 55 years of continuous Labour administration. The result marks the first time the Greens have secured a majority in the borough.

The Green Party secured at least 28 of 54 seats in Lewisham, achieving an outright majority. This outcome ends Labour's uninterrupted control since 1971, when the party first took power.

Labour had held every seat on the council since 2018, following a period of no overall control between 2006 and 2010. The party previously governed from 1971 to 2006 and again from 2010 to 2026.

The result in Lewisham is part of a broader shift in London, where the Greens have now won three councils. Aspire also secured a majority in Tower Hamlets, taking control from no overall control. The Conservatives regained control of Westminster, which they had lost in 2022.
