Keir Starmer told his cabinet he has no intention of resigning after more than 90 Labour MPs and several ministers called for his departure. He stated that no formal leadership challenge had been triggered under party rules, as no candidate had secured the required backing from 81 MPs.
The prime minister said he would continue to govern despite growing pressure and acknowledged responsibility for recent electoral losses. He warned that any leadership contest would destabilise government and impose a real economic cost on the country.
Several junior ministers, including Miatta Fahnbulleh and Jess Phillips, resigned and urged Starmer to step down. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and other cabinet members also called for a departure timetable, though no formal challenge has been issued.
