FIFA president Gianni Infantino has abandoned his proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup after receiving widespread criticism. The plan had intended to form a $20 billion company to manage the tournament with private investors.
Two senior FIFA officials resigned in protest, including Carlos Cordeiro, who had served as a presidential adviser. The resignations followed claims that staff were misled about the project's structure and intent.
The proposed subsidiary would have included commercial rights to the men's and women's World Cups. The anchor investor was identified as a New York-based firm linked to Joshua Kushner, brother of Jared Kushner.
