The strike took place on the same day as an Israeli operation in Hebbarieh, where a local official linked to the Sunni Islamist group al-Jamaa al-Islamiya was apprehended and taken to Israel for questioning. The Islamic Group, which is Lebanon’s branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, condemned the seizure as a violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and called on the Lebanese state to secure the official’s release. The group’s armed wing, Fajr Forces, has been active in cross-border operations since October 2023, aligning with Hezbollah during the Israel-Hamas war.
The conflict ended in 2024 with a U.S.-brokered ceasefire, after which Israel conducted almost daily airstrikes and ground incursions into Lebanon, resulting in over 100 civilian deaths as reported by the United Nations.
