Lord Vallance has been appointed chair of a new Prime Minister’s AI Taskforce as the government moves artificial intelligence work to the centre of Whitehall decision-making.
The government said the taskforce will drive its overall AI strategy, support public sector transformation and seek to unlock opportunities for growth and prosperity across the country.
The unit will report to Cabinet Secretary Antonia Romeo and AI Minister Kanishka Narayan, while Lord Vallance will report directly to Prime Minister Andy Burnham. Mr Narayan will lead the taskforce and attend Cabinet.
Lord Vallance has also been appointed chair of the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor. The government said he brings scientific, technical and public sector experience to the roles.
The taskforce will be based with First Secretary of State Louise Haigh in the Office for the Prime Minister and the Cabinet. That office will include the AI Taskforce alongside No 10, No 10 North and core Cabinet Office functions.
Ministers said the taskforce’s purpose will be to direct and implement the government’s AI strategy and lead work enabling AI adoption across the public sector. Responsibility for the existing AI Security Institute will move to the Office for the Prime Minister and the Cabinet.
