Jon McConnell, who won gold for Team Ireland at the Commonwealth Games, defeated Necat Ekinci of Turkey by unanimous decision in his opening bout at the European Boxing Championships in Sofia.
The contest took place in Bulgaria and concluded with all five judges awarding points to McConnell, resulting in a scoreline of 30:27.
McConnell was the first boxer from the 14-member Team Ireland squad to step into the ring during the competition.
He will face Poland's Damian Durkacz in the last 16 round on Saturday following his win against Lithuania's Aleksandr Trofimcuk.
Two additional Irish boxers are scheduled to compete on Friday, with Jude Gallagher set to meet Slovakia's Maksym Bocarov at 60kg.
Dean Clancy is also due to take on Mohamed Siala from Germany in the 65kg category.
The 23-year-old McConnell claimed a comfortable victory in his initial match of the men's 70kg division.
Team Ireland continues to field representatives across multiple weight classes at this tournament.
