The Northern Irishman finished four strokes behind Ryan Gerard, who leads the field after two rounds.
McIlroy's performance included three birdies during the opening five holes and significant recovery play on the back nine.
He picked up four strokes in the second half of the card, including birdies on the 17th and 18th holes after dropping shots earlier on the eighth and 16th fairways.
The result keeps McIlroy's hopes alive for a record-equalling eighth Race to Dubai title, though this remains unconfirmed pending further rounds.
His teammate Aaron Rai also enjoyed a solid round with a birdie-birdie finish to sign off at six-under-par 69.
Rai played alongside McIlroy and Open champion Ryan Fox in a marquee group that saw five players finish one shot behind the leaders.
Fox was among the quintet of golfers who trailed by a single stroke after McIlroy's round.
Englishman Tommy Fleetwood will miss the weekend cut after posting a seven-over-par 74, leaving him three over at the end of the day.
Spain's Jon Rahm also failed to progress, ending his card with a 77 to finish thirteen-eighteenth and last among those completing Friday's play.
Rahm had previously recorded a six-over-par 78 on Thursday before his subsequent round.
Five-time major champion Brooks Koepka was another prominent name to miss the cut after finishing one over par.
The withdrawal of Patrick Reed following nine holes provided additional buoyancy to McIlroy's prospects.
