Scottish wheelchair racer Melanie Woods has won the David Dixon Award after being named the outstanding athlete of Glasgow 2026.
Commonwealth Sport said Woods received the award after winning two gold medals and showing composure when her first T54 1500m victory was overturned.
Woods initially won the women’s T54 1500m in a Commonwealth Games record of 3:33.39. A collision on the opening lap brought down several athletes, and appeals led to the result being voided and the race being held again.
Less than 40 hours later, Woods returned to the track and won the 1500m for a second time. She took the lead after 100 metres and finished in 3:32.20, lowering the Games record she had set in the original race.
Ninety minutes after that second 1500m victory, she contested the 400m heats and qualified fastest for the final. She won the 400m title the following evening to complete a double on home soil.
The David Dixon Award recognises the athlete judged by peers to have best combined sporting performance, fair play and contribution to their team. Woods’s nomination was based on both her results and the way she responded after the first 1500m result was cancelled.
