Taniela Rainibogi has won Fiji’s first medal of Glasgow 2026 with gold in the men’s 110kg weightlifting competition.
Rainibogi claimed the Commonwealth Games title on 30 July and did so with three Games records. He set new marks in the snatch, the clean and jerk, and the overall total.
The performance gave Fiji an immediate breakthrough on the medal table at the Glasgow Games. It also made Rainibogi the leading figure in a weightlifting contest decided by both power and consistency across the two lifts.
England’s Cyrille Tchatchet II took silver in the event. Samoa’s Jack Opeloge had been in the contest but was unable to complete his final attempts at 210kg, leaving the medal order settled with Rainibogi on top and Tchatchet in second.
Rainibogi’s gold was recorded in Commonwealth Sport’s official day-seven report, which highlighted the triple record performance. The combination of snatch, clean and jerk and total records underlined the margin of his achievement within the Games competition.
For Fiji, the result was more than a single event victory. It was the country’s first medal at Glasgow 2026, and it came in the form of a gold medal backed by Games-record lifts in every scoring category.
The men’s 110kg title adds weightlifting to the list of decisive medal moments in Glasgow. Rainibogi’s record-setting display gave Fiji its first podium appearance of these Games and a Commonwealth title on day seven.
