Filip Nowacki has won Jersey’s first Commonwealth Games gold medal for 36 years with victory in the men’s 200 metres breaststroke at Glasgow 2026.
The 18-year-old claimed the title on 28 July, securing a landmark result for Jersey in the pool. His win followed a silver medal in the 100 metres breaststroke three days earlier, giving him a second medal of the Games.
Nowacki’s 200m breaststroke success ended Jersey’s long wait for a Commonwealth Games title. The island’s previous gold came at Auckland in 1990, when Colin Mallett won in shooting.
The Glasgow victory therefore carries significance beyond the individual event. It returned Jersey to the top of a Commonwealth Games podium for the first time since Mallett’s success, and did so through one of the swimming programme’s breaststroke races.
Nowacki entered the event already on the medal board after his 100m breaststroke silver. The 200m title converted that earlier form into Jersey’s first gold of the Games and its first Commonwealth gold in more than three decades.
The result was recorded in the official day-five report from Commonwealth Sport, which identified Nowacki’s age, his earlier 100m silver and the historic link to Jersey’s 1990 shooting gold. His Glasgow title now stands as one of the island’s major Commonwealth Games achievements.
