A new ice warning was issued by the Met Office for Northern Ireland from 17:00 on 5 January until 10:00 on 6 January. Sub-zero temperatures and ice formation were expected in untreated areas, particularly where snow showers had fallen.
More than 100 schools had already confirmed closures for 6 January 2026. The disruption followed an earlier yellow snow and ice warning that had already caused school and transport disruptions on 5 January.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland urged drivers to take extra care on roads, especially in areas not yet gritted. Motorists were advised to clear windshields and increase following distances due to icy conditions.
