Delegates representing older people across Northern Ireland gathered at Parliament Buildings yesterday for an event designed to allow them to share their lived experiences with government ministers.
Opening proceedings, Edwin Poots MLA welcomed participants and emphasised the necessity of ensuring this demographic has direct access to decision-makers.
During the session, representatives addressed questions to the Minister of Health, the Minister for Communities, the Minister for Infrastructure and the Minister of Justice.
Key topics covered included health and social care provision, financial security, age-friendly housing and accessible transport networks.
Delegates also raised urgent matters regarding protection from scams and abuse, support for carers and active ageing strategies.
The event was co-designed with various organisations and groups operating within the sector to facilitate meaningful dialogue.
Northern Ireland Assembly Deputy Speaker Steve Aiken MLA observed proceedings alongside representatives of the 2026 Older People's Parliament in the Assembly Chamber.
The gathering took place on Thursday 15 October at the venue housing the Northern Ireland Assembly.
Participants sought to discuss advocacy services and combat age discrimination within their communities.
This session provided a structured opportunity for older citizens to influence policy discussions affecting their daily lives.
The event concluded with ministers acknowledging the breadth of issues identified by the delegates.
No further immediate steps were announced regarding specific legislative changes at this time.
