A public consultation has opened on what would become Northern Ireland's first overarching policy for the historic environment.

The draft framework is intended to guide how listed buildings, monuments, historic parks, archaeological sites and underwater heritage are protected, used and made accessible over the next decade.

Evidence considered during the policy's development points to a decline in the condition of parts of the historic environment. The Department for Communities is asking how conservation, public access, skills and community involvement can be improved while heritage assets continue to support towns, villages and the wider economy.

The proposals were developed through the department's Heritage, Culture and Creativity programme. They also consider the role that historic places can play in wellbeing, education, tourism and the regeneration of communities.

The consultation seeks views on the draft vision, its policy aims and practical issues including workforce skills and outreach. Responses will remain open until October 23.
