Sumo Na hÉireann opened in Belfast in 2024 and is recognised as the first sumo wrestling club on the island of Ireland. The club has attracted new members weekly since its founding.
Toraigh Mallon is identified as Ireland's first female sumo wrestler and is preparing for the British Isles Sumo Wrestling Championship. She trains regularly in the gym, boxing, and on the sumo ring mat.
Johnny Templeton, the club's founder, previously competed for Team GB in amateur sumo events. He established the club after experiencing success in UK sumo competitions and noted similarities to traditional Irish collar-and-elbow wrestling.
