Spain have become the first country to hold both the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cups after the men’s team defeated Argentina in the 2026 final.
The men’s side won 1-0 after extra time against the defending champions, adding the 2026 title to Spain’s first men’s World Cup success in 2010. Spain’s women had won their World Cup in 2023.
UEFA described the result as completing an international double for Spain. The governing body listed Luis de la Fuente’s side as winners of the 2026 tournament after topping Group H and then beating Austria, Portugal, Belgium, France and Argentina in the knockout rounds.
The final also brought a landmark for two of Spain’s youngest players. FOX Sports reported that Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi became the first pair of teenage team-mates to start and win a World Cup final.
Both players were 19. FOX Sports placed them on a list of teenagers who had started and won the final, alongside Pele in 1958, Giuseppe Bergomi in 1982 and Kylian Mbappe in 2018.
Spain’s run also extended the men’s team’s international unbeaten sequence to 38 matches, surpassing Italy’s previous record of 37. The final was settled by Ferran Torres, whose extra-time goal secured Spain’s second men’s world title.
