Northern Ireland's Commonwealth Games team has been welcomed home at Parliament Buildings after completing the Glasgow programme with 16 medals. Athletes, coaches and support staff attended the Stormont reception following a campaign that produced three gold, four silver and nine bronze medals.
The gold medals came through Kate O'Connor in the heptathlon, boxer Jon McConnell at 70kg, and the men's bowls pair of Gary Kelly and Adam McKeown. Podium finishes across swimming, boxing, athletics and bowls gave the team a broad spread of results over the competition.
At the reception, the Department for Communities announced £200,000 for the next Commonwealth cycle through the Mary Peters Trust and Sport NI. A further £2 million was outlined for a crowdfunding grant programme intended to help clubs and community sports projects improve facilities and participation.
The homecoming served both as recognition for the Glasgow performance and as the beginning of planning for the next cycle. Major-games preparation extends beyond the athletes on the final team, taking in coaching, medical support, qualification events and the development routes that bring younger competitors into senior programmes.
The final total placed Team NI above its initial 15-medal target. The longer-term measure will be how effectively the announced support reaches governing bodies, clubs and athletes. Detailed conditions and application arrangements for the separate funding streams are expected through the relevant delivery organisations.
