Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has congratulated Team NI athletes after they won 16 medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The Northern Ireland team secured three gold, four silver and nine bronze medals during the Games. The Department for Communities said athletes also achieved personal and season bests and set new records.
Gold medals were won by Katherine O’Connor in the athletics heptathlon, Jon McConnell in men’s 70kg boxing, and Gary Kelly and Adam McKeown in the men’s pairs bowls.
Silver medals went to Barry McClements in the men’s 100m backstroke S9 para swimming, Daniel Wiffen in the men’s 1500m freestyle, Michaela Walsh in women’s 57kg boxing and Kaci Rock in women’s 65kg boxing.
Bronze medals were won across swimming, para swimming, boxing, bowls and judo. Medallists included Ellie McCartney, Bethany Firth, William John McCartan, Jude Gallager, Garyn McAllister, Gary Kelly, Chloe Wilson and Shauna O’Neill, Joshua Green and Rachael Hawkes.
Mr Lyons attended the opening ceremony and a number of events, meeting athletes and coaches. He said every Team NI athlete had represented Northern Ireland with distinction and described the athletes as role models for the next generation.
The minister said he would host a homecoming reception at Parliament Buildings this week for athletes, coaches and support staff. He said Team NI’s performances showed what could be achieved through hard work, determination and belief.
