Lucas Herbert leads The 154th Open at the halfway stage after shooting a second-round 62 at Royal Birkdale.
The Open's official report says Herbert reached eight under par, moving to the top of the leaderboard after equalling the lowest round in the Championship's history. Sam Burns also shot 62 on the same day, with both players joining the record list at the Southport venue.
Herbert finished two shots ahead of Jackson Suber, Cameron Young and Ryan Gerard, who were listed together behind him. Burns was at five under alongside Si Woo Kim, with Bryson DeChambeau also on that mark heading into the weekend.
The official account records that Herbert birdied each of his first three holes and went out in 28. That matched the lowest front nine in Open history, a score previously recorded by Denis Durnian at Royal Birkdale in 1983.
Herbert added further birdies at the 11th, 12th and 16th holes. The Open's report says he missed a five-foot putt at the 18th which would have made him the first man to record a 61 in one of golf's showpiece events, leaving him instead with a 62.
The leaderboard also includes British interest a shot behind the group at five under, with Tommy Fleetwood, Matt Wallace, Robert MacIntyre and Alex Fitzpatrick leading that charge according to The Open. At the close of the second round, however, Herbert held the lead at eight under after a score that placed him in the Championship record books.
