Ryan Fox has won The Open at Royal Birkdale, finishing one shot ahead of Cameron Young to become Champion Golfer of the Year.
The Open's official report records Fox ending the championship on 10 under par. He reached the 18th tee tied for the lead at nine under before making birdie on the final hole.
According to the championship account, Young was on the practice range anticipating at least a play-off as Fox played the 72nd hole. The 18th had played as the toughest hole on the course during the week.
Fox found the fairway from the tee and then hit his approach to 12 feet. He holed the birdie putt to move clear and secure the title without a play-off.
The victory is recorded as Fox's first major title and his first top-10 finish in a major. His position at the halfway stage had been level par after rounds of 72 and 68, leaving him two shots inside the cut line.
A third-round 62 moved Fox up the leaderboard and into the final group. The Open report said that score made him the third player during the week to equal the record lowest round in a major. Sam Burns held the 54-hole lead by two shots, while Si Woo Kim, Scottie Scheffler, Tommy Fleetwood and Young were among those to challenge on Sunday.
