The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Sir Chris Bryant MP, has officially confirmed the reappointment of Chief Commissioner Alyson Kilpatrick to the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission. The decision takes effect on 1 September 2026 and secures her position for a further three-year period. In addition to this renewal, four new Commissioners have been selected to join the panel starting from the same date. These individuals are Orla Drummond, Gavin Gray, Ben Warwick and Jacqueline Witherow. The appointments were made by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in accordance with statutory requirements. The Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission operates as an executive non-departmental public body sponsored by the Northern Ireland Office. Its mandate includes reviewing the adequacy and effectiveness of human rights law and practice within the region while promoting broader awareness of these principles. The commission functions alongside the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland and the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission under a dedicated mechanism created by Article 2 of the Ireland/Northern Ireland Protocol to the Withdrawal Agreement with the European Union. Established through the Northern Ireland Act 1998 as part of the Belfast / Good Friday Agreement, the body holds 'A' status accreditation from the United Nations. Its powers and duties are grounded in legislation including the Justice and Security (Northern Ireland) Act 2007 and align with UN General Assembly Resolution 48/134 regarding the Paris Principles.
