Work has begun today on a £550,000 shared footway and cycleway scheme on the B158 Stiles Way in Antrim. Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins said the project forms part of the Department for Infrastructure’s work to improve active travel infrastructure and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.
The scheme will extend for approximately 480 metres along Stiles Way. It will begin at the Stiles Way roundabout on the A26 Ballymena Road, pass beneath the railway bridge and connect by ramp to the Springfarm Footbridge.
As part of the works, a new toucan crossing will be installed on the eastern side of the Stiles Way roundabout. The route will also connect to a second toucan crossing on the southern side of the roundabout at the Ballymena Road entrance.
The department said the crossings and route are intended to create a continuous and safer link for pedestrians and cyclists travelling through the area. The minister said the work would enhance provision for cyclists and pedestrians and was part of her commitment to increasing opportunities for active travel.
Temporary traffic management will be in place on the B158 Stiles Way from today for a period of 18 weeks. The department said the works and traffic management arrangements have been programmed to minimise inconvenience, but road users should expect some delays and allow additional time when travelling through the area.
The dates and duration of the works depend on favourable weather conditions. The department said all works will be carried out in line with current health and safety requirements, with safe systems of work in place for staff and contractors. The public and residents have been asked to comply with temporary traffic restrictions while the scheme is completed.
