India's Mirabai Chanu begins her bid for a third successive Commonwealth weightlifting title as the competition starts at Glasgow 2026.

Chanu returns to the city where she won the first major international weightlifting medal of her career. She took silver in the women's 48kg event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and now comes back as an Olympic silver medallist and two-time defending Commonwealth champion.

Commonwealth Sport listed her return among the main stories to follow on day three of the Games. Sunday's programme includes the start of weightlifting alongside title-deciding action in artistic gymnastics, swimming and para swimming, and another full day of 3x3 basketball.

The evidence supplied does not give Chanu's Glasgow 2026 weight category, opponent list or lifting schedule, but it identifies her central objective as the pursuit of a third consecutive Commonwealth crown. That would extend a record already shaped by success at the previous two Games.

The day's weightlifting programme also carries significance for Papua New Guinea. Thelma Toua competes after following the path of her sister Dika, who won gold in Glasgow in 2014 and medals at three Commonwealth Games.

Later, Morea Baru is due to compete in the men's 65kg division after winning silver at Birmingham 2022. Commonwealth Sport described Papua New Guinea as having two genuine medal opportunities on the opening day of weightlifting, placing Chanu's title defence within a wider programme of established Commonwealth lifters returning to the platform.
