Resurfacing work has started on the A55 Belvoir Road in south Belfast, beginning a programme of lane restrictions and weekend closures that is expected to continue into October. The £650,000 scheme covers the section between Newtownbreda Road and Saintfield Road.
Permanent lane closures are in place from August 11 until August 31 while preliminary and carriageway work proceeds. Drivers should expect reduced capacity throughout that period and may need additional time for journeys through the outer ring route.
Four full closures have also been scheduled. The road is due to close from August 22 to 24 and again from August 29 to 31, followed by further closures on September 6 to 7 and September 13 to 14. Temporary signs will mark the exact start and finish times.
The signed diversion will use Purdysburn Road, Beechill Road and Saintfield Road. Access for people living or working within the affected area will be maintained where it is safe and practical, but arrangements may alter as machinery moves between sections.
The project includes renewal of the road surface and associated improvement work. The Department for Infrastructure has set October 6 as the expected completion date, subject to weather and any conditions encountered after the existing surface is removed.
Belvoir Road carries local traffic as well as journeys between east and south Belfast. Road users have been asked to observe temporary speed limits and traffic controls, and to use the diversion rather than attempting to pass through a closed working area.
